Interiors – The mettle in Interior Design and Architecture

By thedesignvillage, April 23, 2015

Interior Design is more than meets the eye.

Interior Design vs. Interior Decoration is an age old topic of discussion and debate, and both the terms are most often used interchangeably. In India especially, interior designers seem to be mistaken for the people, who just provide the ‘look and feel’ to a project, but in reality, these professions differ and vary in critical ways.

Interior design is the art and science of understanding people’s behavior to create functional spaces within a building. Decoration is the furnishing or adorning of a space with fashionable or beautiful things. In short, interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design. Interior designers apply creative and technical solutions within a structure that is functional, attractive and beneficial to the occupants’ quality of life and culture. Designs respond to and coordinate with the building shell and acknowledge the physical location and social context of the project. Designs must adhere to code and regulatory requirements and encourage the principles of environmental sustainability.

Interior Architecture stands at the intersection of architecture, design of the built environment, and renovation, rejuvenation of existing spaces. Programs in Interior architecture address the design issues, intrinsic to the re-use and transformation of existing structures through both an innovative and a progressive approach. Nowadays, the extension of architecture and interior design can be seen in corporate/branded environments. Temporary Architecture inside the building or outside is also a budding field of design today. Retail design, Exhibition and Museum design along with Set design form this new realm of Interior Architecture where lighting, graphics and landscape design complement this field holistically.

The process of designing such environments is often research-driven, lead by an interior designer or an architect and may include an interdisciplinary team of consultants ranging from marketing and communication to graphic designers.

Understanding the mettle of this upcoming field in Design, The Design Village has developed a master level program solely for Interior Architecture in collaboration with the French college L’Ecole de Design Nantes Atlantique, France
