What You Can Do If You Can’t Get Through NID/NIFT?

NIFT and NID are part of the premium design colleges in the country. Apart from being government based colleges, they are also the oldest design schools of India, amassing a massive reputation. This also means that there are more than 5000 people who appear for their entrance exams out which only a handful of them make it.

If one can’t get through NIFT/NID exams, it is of utmost importance to not lose hope and start looking at other available options.

It is not the end of the world. Even though NIFT/NID are the best design schools there are various private and regional design based colleges and institutes that offer premium design courses.

Such colleges provide a wide range of courses in design sometimes even greater than NID or NIFT.

Most of the time these institutes have their own eligibility criteria and entrance exams.  A lot of colleges focus on individual development and look to build on the skills present in an individual, hence it is wise to keep a track of their entrance exams and admission procedure and apply to as many colleges and institutes as possible as per one’s choice of course and convenience.

Why choose The Design Village

The Design Village is an interdisciplinary, industry-centric design institute. Here each student embarks upon a journey mapping a personal learning path which could either be through a specific discipline (silo specific) or a non silo approach.

The journey is based on the learning manifesto of each student and the itinerary chalked out to achieve it and hence the journey undertaken by every student is unique and bespoke and it doesn’t cease at the end of the course.

In the field of design, what matters more than degrees is the exposure one gets during their studies and the experience they gain from working in the industry. With faculty from the premier design institutes of the world and collaborations with top international design associations each student at The Design Village gets the opportunity to work with the best.

At The Design Village ‘The’ emphasizes the aspiration to be a premier center. ‘Design’ mix – that of institutes, associations, studios, industries, students and faculty all co-existing, cooperating and collaborating within a whole.

The Design Village believes in impact through design, life through design. For The Design Village design does not only solve problems of today but also proposes new ways for the future.

One cannot design in isolation and hence an orthodox form of classroom does not suit design education, at the award winning campus of The Design Village there is creativity oozing from each of its corners, harbouring innovation.

As mentioned before, in design what matters more is the exposure and experience but the UGC recognised degree of The Design Village is only a plus point which opens more avenues for higher education in design.

At The Design Village one can choose from a wide array of courses, some of which are:

1. Fashion & Textile Design

Fashion is propagated as a mere expression of logos, seasonal wear and colors, limited to screens and reels. This notion is not only limiting but also misleading. We are at a point of transition in terms of time where what is relevant today may not remain so in the future.

The focus of the programme is to equip the students with tools and techniques which can help them to become a fashion and textile designer who doesn’t only solve problems of today but also proposes new ways for the future. Beside this, the student understands the entire product cycle through-Making, Surfaces and Manifestation modules.

As their names indicate, the modules pans across the entire gamut of fashion and textiles right from understanding the cultural context of the production of yarn, weaving/ knitting of fabric

2. Space and Interior Design

The relationship between spaces and humans is interwoven, they have the power to influence the human psyche. The program at TDV aims to train students to carefully integrate all the nuanced factors to building and designing a space.

3. Product design

The role of a product designer is that of a problem solver, somebody who uses the different facets and tools of design to create and execute a solution that solves for a user’s experience deficiencies. A good product designer does not only solve problems of today but designs for the future and the program at TDV trains just for that.

“A good designer can design anything. Always keep in mind that a student’s success majorly depends on their talent, their passion and their  determination rather than on the institute they studied from.”
